Anatomy of a MaiMai Lesson Plan

Every plan opens with a 1-sentence essential question and 2–3 measurable objectives. The procedure is timed — opener (5 min), direct instruction (10 min), guided activity (15 min), independent or pair work (15 min), closing reflection (5 min). Differentiation strategies for ELL and IEP students are built into every step. An exit ticket and a project-based extension follow.

Standards Alignment in Practice

Plans are tagged with specific standard codes — for example, NCSS Theme 1 (Culture), Common Core RI.4.3 (text analysis), or ACTFL Novice-Mid Interpersonal Communication. This makes them quick to drop into your scope-and-sequence and easy to defend in evaluations.

Activities

  • 🗺️ Country Spotlight (30 min): K–2 plan: identify a country on the map, learn one greeting, color one cultural symbol.
  • 🌐 Compare and Contrast (45 min): 3–5 plan: students compare two cultures across 4 dimensions (food, language, holidays, daily life).
  • 📝 Cultural Identity Essay (60 min): 6–8 plan: students write about their own cultural heritage, learning empathy through self-reflection.
  • 🎤 Documentary Project (multi-day): 9–12 plan: small groups produce a 5-minute documentary on a country's contemporary issue.
  • 🎒 Cultural Artifacts Showcase: Students bring an item from their family heritage and present its story.
  • 🍴 International Food Day: School-wide plan with parent involvement, recipe printables, and reflection journals.
